The New Texas Electricity Plan

Texas has had grid collapse problems, and its government says they need to be fixed. One way to do this is to ensure data centers do not draw too much of the current electricity capacity. The work has already begun.

Inside Climate News reports, New state legislation seeks to address grid challenges from hosting large energy users like data centers while remaining an attractive place to do business.” It is an early example of how electricity use has become a major political issue. That means it will be part of the fight for votes, and a candidate for a great deal of time in the courts.

A Battle From State To State

The Texas plan is radical. It allows state grid operators to cut off electricity to data centers completely. It is called a “death switch.” It will require work to build a much stronger grid to argue that this should be eliminated

Texas wants to be the home to data centers. They bring jobs and money to upgrade electricity generation, grid upgrades, and repairs.  Future legislation will include input from both data center providers and utilities, who would benefit from their business.

Part of the current plans is not adequate. “The current system largely incentivizes big customers to save energy during four 15-minute periods each year when capacity on the grid is tight,” WSJ reports.

The fight will go from state to state, and city to city. The grid is years beyond the needs of data centers. So is the development of renewables.
