Electricity Gets Ugly

The use of diesel generators for backup power in data centers is commonplace—and Problematic, according to the FT.

Energy analysts and environmentalists say diesel generators are expensive, noisy, highly polluting, and
exempt from Clean Air Act regulations in times of energy “emergencies.” A shutdown of the grid or low availability of electricity due to residential use may also qualify. If not, it may be too late to make a difference.

Coal Not Diesel

Due to the weakness of the grid and the lack of sufficient electricity, diesel may be a short-term solution, albeit a short-term one, given the use of fossil fuels. Electricity shortages can have multiple explanations. If the shortage is due to renewables not generating enough power, a default to coal may be the most readily available option.

To solve this, green has to grow faster, which under the Trump Administration will not happen. Dirty electricity and data centers may be the backup standard for AI centers for several years.
