Does Fusion Really Work At All?

Fusion energy achieved a “breakthrough.” However, there is no evidence that this can turn into a commercially scalable source of energy, despite a frenzy of believers and investors. A breakthrough means it used less energy than it generated.

Axios noted significant interest in a fusion of private investors and the government. The Trump Administration provides a fusion roadmap. That means, maybe, an investment of billions of dollars. Whether this will be for the private sector or for government projects is unclear. The Fusion Industry Association will also be involved, as will be several private investors.

Among the reasons for the surge in government interest is China’s investment of about $6 billion in fusion. It is an energy arms race that is, to some extent, as crucial as the AI race, and both are related. Fusion promises endless energy, but not infinite intelligence

Is It Like AI?

Axios adds, “The federal government, no matter the administration, hasn’t supported fusion’s scale-up nearly as much as it has its atomic cousin: fission.” This returns to the issue of skepticism

Of course, the tech work is awash in skepticism today. No one knows what the future of AI holds; people have made countless guesses. Investments in AI in the US could hit $1 trillion in 2025 and 2026

Fusion is not going to get $1 trillion, and perhaps it does not deserve it.
