Home Electricity Audits May Save The Grid

In some ways, utilities do not want to have more revenue. Most already face overloads in demand. One tool that has become increasingly popular is the home energy audit. In theory, a home energy expert evaluates homes to identify areas where energy can be saved.  These audits will become more popular as demand for AI data centers rises.

The Department of Energy calls this activity “Professional Home Energy Assessments.” People who are trained to conduct energy audits are supposed to receive extensive training. They are also supposed to go room to room to find “energy leaks.”

The DOE says, “Through the process, the home assessor will gather information and produce a report including characterizations of your home and action you can take to reduce your home’s energy use while increasing comfort of the living space.” Typically, this includes air seals, insulation, ductwork, attics, foundations, walls, moisture leaks, and electricity for lighting.

At one point, this service was just a service. However, it has become a way to take weight off the grid. This weight has already begun raising energy costs for residential customers. These audits may bring those bills down. Each home that uses electricity more efficiently should get a lower bill. This may, however, only work if AI centers do not eat up all those savings.
