U.S. Electricity Use Falls Behind Canada

Based on electricity use per capita, Canada has taken the top spot ahead of the U.S. This is largely due to the country’s cold weather and some heavy industry. The number is based on KWh.

The Canadian number is 15.7, followed by the US at 12.7 and South Korea at 12.1. India is at the bottom of the largest nations at 1.4

Interestingly, electricity use in many of these countries has decreased slightly per capita when compared to 2020.

The number for the US is not surprising. The EIA shows electricity use in America as fairly flat for the last two decades. While the fuel mixture has shifted toward renewables, demand has remained unaffected.

India At The Bottom

What will almost certainly change is the demand for the years ahead.  Canada is not currently a location for AI data centers. However, that could change. Data centers in the southern part of the country could, on paper, serve AI companies located in the US. If South Korea establishes an AI presence, that could happen as well.

Almost every major nation will have some level of data center infrastructure in place. Firms like OpenAI will not be handing business in Asia using.

AI will change these numbers entirely.
