What Electricity Costs Americans
Energy Wall has released a study showing how much people spend on energy each year. The news report covers 2024. While oil and gas prices are the largest component, electricity may well surpass them in future studies.Â
“In 2024, the U.S. average energy wallet spending was $5,530 per household, of which $1,850 was for utility electric bills,” the report shows. However, gasoline and fuel cost $2,930.
The national average is not a reasonable way to look at the numbers. The price of a gallon of regular gas is $5 in some California cities. It is below $2.50 in Mississippi. Electricity prices vary just as much. In many cases, a tax by the federal or state governments has a significant effect. Climate also plays a role.Â
The Price Of Gas By State
As the US gets hotter, Air-Conditioning costs will rise. In some parts of the country, like Phoenix, AC costs can be higher than mortgages. The electricity to power them is that expensive
Which way will these costs go? Oil prices have dropped below $60. That means $3.00 gas. That means the 2024 figure will come down. However, electricity prices will rise. Part is AC. A larger factor is the growth of AI data centers.
It is not clear whether, when all factors are taken into account, the $5,530 will grow, and whether it would grow if adjusted for inflation.
