Wind Turbines Cost Too Much to Work
Green energy needs wind. It is among the three-legged stool meant to lower fossil fuel use and emissions.
Wind turbines, particularly those offshore, are extremely expensive. It may be a drawback that can’t be overcome soon. If that is the case, the clean energy movement is cripple, particularly as the cost of energy soars.
Wind farms located far out at sea require specialized work to anchor them to the ocean floor. These also need to be able to withstand storms and strong sea currents. Those that are very far out at sea require maintenance crews to travel long distances.
A case in point recently happened in Japan. According to the FT, Mitsubishi Corporation has withdrawn from three major wind farm locations. The reason is the cost of turbines. Another is typhoons, which are similar to hurricanes.
The Cost Of Blades
Wind turbine blades are expensive and huge. That makes them hard to manufacture and transport. At sea, they can be damaged by a bird strike and stormy weather.
While some of the manufacturing and installation costs may decrease, environmental-based issues will not.
The clean energy movement needs wind as electricity demands skyrocket. However, it may not be practical.
